Revolutionizing Surgery with Toumai: The Robot-Assisted Surgical Marvel

MicroPort MedBot's Toumai: A Leap Forward in Robotic Surgery

In the ever-evolving world of medical technology, a new player has emerged. MicroPort MedBot's Toumai, a robot-assisted surgical system, is set to revolutionize the field with its unique features and advanced capabilities. This article delves into the design, inspiration, and unique properties of this groundbreaking innovation.

MicroPort MedBot drew inspiration for Toumai from the need for more advanced, efficient, and cost-effective surgical robots. With only one widely commercialized laparoscopic surgical robot available globally, the introduction of Toumai aims to reduce the economic burden on patients and accelerate the development and promotion of robotic surgery.

What sets Toumai apart from its counterparts is its unique properties. It boasts a realistic 3D surgical field, fine manipulation of micro-instruments, and high dexterity in narrow spaces. These features are integral to complex laparoscopic operations, including separation and hemostasis, suturing and knotting, and functional reconstruction. The technology also minimizes surgical trauma, bleeding, and complication rates associated with traditional open surgery, making operations safer and more precise.

Toumai's realization technology is equally impressive. It features four overhanging and turnable mechanical arms to achieve more operation positions. The adjustable vision cart can accommodate different size medical devices to meet surgery needs. The robot is made from biocompatible plastics and precision aluminum alloys, ensuring safety and durability.

The interaction with Toumai is designed to enhance the surgeon's capabilities. The surgeon performs the surgery by operating the surgical console, and the robot side synchronizes the surgeon's movements. The robot filters out the surgeon's hand tremors to improve the safety of the surgery, the console provides a realistic 3D view of the surgery to magnify the surgical details, and the robot's instruments provide a range of motion beyond the limits of human hands to achieve difficult surgeries.

MicroPort began research and development for Toumai in 2014 in Shanghai. The surgical robot was approved for marketing by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in January 2022. During the registered clinical trials, Toumai was used in a series of challenging surgeries with the purpose of broadening its clinical applications. It became the first domestic laparoscopic robot to complete clinical trials in the field of thoracic and pelvic surgery (urology and gynecology) in China.

Despite the challenges in integrating several technologies such as mechanical electronics, artificial intelligence, and software algorithms, the team at MicroPort MedBot successfully developed a product that is safe and effective. The achievement of Toumai is a testament to the R&D strength of Chinese companies in the field of intelligent surgical robots.

For its remarkable design and innovative features, Toumai was awarded the Golden A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology. It is a testament to the prodigy and wisdom of the designers at MicroPort MedBot and the extraordinary excellence of Toumai.
